Aberdeen Sports Village Corporate Games 2023 – A look back

A big thank you to everyone who took part in the Corporate Games this year.

53 members of staff took part in the events and you can see a selection of photos and comments from participants below. NHS Grampian came 5th overall so we were placed in the top half of the table.

NHS Grampian’s participation in this event is funded by NHS Grampian Charity, via the Sports Committee.

Q7.

Meeting people from NHS Grampian that I probably would not have met otherwise was great. The training and event were good fun too.
Something I've never tried before but really enjoyed it and looking at being more active in the future
Allowed me to try a new sport, meet colleagues from across the NHS and competitive element
Really enjoyed the semi-competitive atmosphere with plenty of scope to try something that you were quite sure you wouldn't be good at, amongst a lot of very supporting people!
Great fun, chance to meet new people and hope to keep in touch and continue playing
Tried out a new sport
Great fun and met some great people!
I really enjoyed the swim event with our NHS Team. Looking forward to 2024!
Touch rugby was good, football was very rough and not for less experienced players.
My fellow team mates were amazing, so friendly, supportive and encouraging. I thoroughly enjoyed both the training and the event.
Great Fun & a good challenge
The corporate games were a great opportunity to connect with staff from various sectors, departments and disciplines. I enjoyed meeting new people with a common interest and having fun.
Was quite disorganised - unclear when email was sent for more players that there were likely enough players already and would likely be reserves. Perhaps have team captains or something so there is some leadership as random people turned up at last minute and some wanted to be serious and win and others were there for fun. Training session was one guy trying (admirably) to coach about 60 people at once. Given my experience of the training provided in a sport I already knew how to play I certainly would not try out any new sports as part of the games. Training would not be useful for those familiar with the sport as was very basic , we werent put into employer groups either so didnt get to play with teammates much. Training didn't teach the rules of badminton. ASV coach said that you coudln't have players switch between games as it would be unfair on other teams which impacted the planning with lots of stress with people thinking only 6 could play and dropping out only for us then to apparently have too few players before other randoms turned up on the night. In the end no-one was prepared to decide what teh teams shodul be so I decided we shoudl just switch teams around so that everybody had a chance to play. ASV ddint say anything to us about this but I suspect we may have been deducted points because of it as though we didn't play all that well I don't think our results were the worst of all teh teams there.
Table tennis was great fun, nice team.
The atmosphere is always great. It is a fun day out. Meeting others from NHSG and prople you would not usually meet is good.
Good to meet people from other parts of the organisation, lovely people involved, good to interact with people from other companies
last minute decision to join the diving team. Absolutely didnt regret it!! faced fears, met some great encouraging people, learned a new skill will i will look into developing further. Brilliantly organised and camaraderie from all involved. will definitely sign up again next year
Loved it, such a fun activity and really helped give me something to aim for and look forward to.

Q11.

I'd like to try and take part in a couple of events next year.
The corporate decathlon has been brilliant for bringing the workforce together. Connections have been made in other areas within the system which may have never of happened if we hadn't met through the corporate decathlon.
It's a good atmosphere. NHSG always feels a bit of the underdog, surrounded by highly-paid private sector teams, but we definitely have the most fun.
Great fun for the support Charities provides so we can try new sports
This is such a great competition to be part of. Long may it continue. Thanks for organising and letting us be part of it!
It was a wonderful opportunity to swim competitively for the first time in 30 years! I joined the swim team to show my support for NHSG, meet other employees of NHSG, for my own health and wellbeing and to show my kids that 'you are never too old'!
It would be great to promote the corporate games more and get more people involved. Would posters/flyers for individual events help?
If the aim is to encourage staff to try sports they have not done before then the corporate games is not, based on my experience, the way to do it as the training is so basic as to be worthless. The games are obviously taken quite seriously by the other companies involved and so are not really suitable for beginners. I think if NHSG do want to enter proper teams into the corporate games on a more competitive basis next year then having teams set up well beforehand with opportunities for them to play together and practice is what is needed and leadership to decide upon who the strongest teams are. In terms of widening participation and people playing more socially and trying new sports I think this is a really good idea but is probably best done outside of the constraints of the corporate games (such as the football team and tennis etc - it was as a result of the corporate games that I found out about these so that was a good thing to come out of it.)
I just went to the training session for badminton. People created a whatsapp group and asked the worst players not to play, or just go as reserves. I think everyone should be able to play, not just the best players. I think this event should be focused on team building and less competitive. Also, it should be clarified if there's a maximum number of people joining the team.
I understand what was going on, but I was a bit disheartened by the swimming. There were lots of Club swimmers put into teams who did not have enough swimmers which meant that the companies who did not need extras were now competing against club swimmers. But it was still a fab experience
I really hope to encourage more of my own staff to part take, it was great on so many different levels. well done team
I loved taking part in the games. Such a lovely initiative and free which was even better! Top quality dive training and opportunity to meet NHSG staff from other areas who I wouldn't have met otherwise. Thanks for all the work that went into organising.

Agree with how great it was meeting like minded, lovely people from other parts of the organisation. Would love to stay in touch with you all

I had a great time on Friday and have been on a high from it all weekend. It was possibly one of the most gruelling experiences of my life but I am so glad I got to do it with such a fab team. I think we did ourselves and NHSG proud coming in 4th.

Our experience of the swimming gala, as you already know, was extremely positive and we thoroughly enjoyed being part of the NHSG Team.

We both have some slight aches from the weekend, but it was well worth it. We both had a fab time and our children were delighted to come and support Team NHS!

We will try to keep up the training for next year

If there was a prize for spirit and enthusiasm we would have been in the running for Gold!

It was a fab day!

We were deffo the noisiest bunch, the atmosphere was great and the support and banners helped keep it that way!
